Richard and I spent Saturday at Hopton visiting Wendy in her caravan. She was staying there for a couple of nights with Debbie and Juanita and Margaret Underwood.
We wanted to write to let you know what a lovely day we had but mostly what a treat it was to see Wendy in this environment. She is a different person – happier, more responsive, more alert and generally just so excited to be away “on holiday”. A really significant difference in Wendy’s responses was that she used Debbie and Juanita’s names all through the day – this is something Wendy isn’t usually very good at – and we think it shows just how differently she reacts to the whole carer/client relationship than when she is at home at Balfour House. Whilst the atmosphere at Balfour is always friendly and interactive there are none the less tasks to be done and the routine to be followed – but it was noticeable that in the caravan it was total one to one contact and that obviously benefits the relationship. It was much more like being on holiday with friends for Wendy and the staff commented on how much better they get to know their clients spending time with them in that environment.
We are just so delighted that Wendy is now a part owner and able to participate as fully as staff resources allow.
We met John Mills while we were there and he mentioned to us that he had provided you with figures to upgrade the caravan last year. We’re obviously not in any position to know what financial resources the other clients have but we know from Wendy’s point of view any money spent on an upgrade would be totally in her best interests. We thought the caravan with the verandah on the front and double opening doors would be wonderful for the Balfour House tenants – particularly those with mobility problems – they could be wheeled out onto the verandah and take advantage of the views and the fresh air without too much hassle to move them.
The clients at Balfour House are all elderly now with varying degrees of mobility. While its important to get them out on a daily basis as much as possible we know this isn’t always appropriate or enjoyable for them – which is why in our view the caravan becomes even more important – a lovely two or three day break from routine, in a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, and with all that lovely sea air too!
Thank you for all you have done in the past to make this holiday facility a reality for them and for the work you and your team continue to do on their behalf to keep it going.
