Marty lived in a supported housing scheme with the use of a shared kitchen, bathroom and lounge and it is important to note that he hadn’t chosen the people he lived with. As a result, Marty found communal living a little challenging and became disengaged with the wider community. He spent most of his time simply wandering around the house with no real purpose. Mealtimes were not pleasant experiences and Marty simply ate what was given and had no say in what and when he liked to eat. Marty enjoyed no real sense of independence and found that there was little time for genuine social interaction.
How we helped
It is almost impossible to describe how much Marty has changed as result of the support he has received from us since 2012. Most significantly, Marty now has his own flat that is furnished just as he likes it, making it a comfortable home that truly reflects his own tastes and interests.
Marty has his own car and gets out and about every day and he also likes to take the bus and train for shopping and leisure activities further afield. He has taken an annual holiday and enjoys swimming, boat trips, meals out, day trips and country pubs.
We encourage Marty to live a full and active life in the community and we show him how to put money aside for life’s unexpected expenses. We ensure that there is a budget for holidays and day trips once all the bills have been paid for and Marty understands the importance of good money management. We keep on top of all Marty’s benefits and make sure that he is receiving all he is entitled to.
The future
Marty has such a cheerful personality and a positive approach to life and we are sure that with the continued support of our team, Marty will live a full and active life. He is hoping for an extension to his much-beloved flat and we are supporting him to achieve this in the near future.
