Heather lived in a large bungalow with around eight others and had her own room but shared the kitchen and living areas. Sadly, Heather spent most days in her room, rarely leaving it or the bungalow. Her level of well-being at this time was very poor both emotionally and physically and she developed a vitamin D deficiency and had breathing problems due to damp and mould in her room. She suffered from social isolation and was losing some significant skill levels in writing, number recognition and identifying days of the week. Significantly, Heather was not receiving the one-to-one support she so clearly needed.
How we helped
Heather’s support team comment that from day one, back in her own home in February 2012, Heather became more settled. Heather now participates in daily chores and tasks such as food shopping, cleaning and light gardening, which she really enjoys. Importantly, her social interaction with others has greatly improved and she now enjoys an active social life which is helped by having her own mobility car.
Heather’s skill levels have returned and with our help she now has a gym membership and a cinema card, both increasing her engagement with the wider world. She has also brought an iPad for £500 with apps to support her anxieties as part of her Positive Behaviour Plan. Most importantly, Heather is happy, more confident and feels secure and settled.
We help manage Heather’s day-to-day finances and also help her plan for future expenses. We offer Heather advice and support about rapidly-changing benefits so that she is always receiving what she is entitled too. This has meant great peace of mind for Heather and her family who enjoy the security of knowing that the financial side of Heather’s life is closely managed.
The future
Heather’s future is now enhanced by the long-term security that comes from having her own home for life. She is able to make small improvements to her home and decorate from time to time, truly creating a very special home of her own.
